LONDON (PTI): Aug.28, GM Dibyendu Barua, Im J.S.Gokhale and WEM Saheli Dhar have posted creditable victories in the seventh round of the Lloyds bank master’s chess championship here.
The good show of the Indians in this round continued on Friday as Asian chess Queen Bhagyashree Thipsay improved her chances of finishing in the prize list by scoring a creditable draw against fide master Ansell.
Meanwhile, second seed GM Jonathan Speelman shot into the lead by scoring a crushing victory over the overnight leader GM James Plassket,
Playing Queen’s Indian defense, speeman outplayed Plassket both tactically and position ally to win a couple of pawns midway through the game. Threatened with further loss of material, Plassket resigned in the 31st move.
GMS Nunn, Budhnikov, Norwood and Ims Sadler, Reilly and Tkachiev joined Van Der Sterren, Plassket and Miles in the second position by scoring easy victories over their opponents,
GM Norwood played the Larsen opening against Pravin Thipsay and obtained slight positional advantage, The Indian champion forces a inferior ending by ex-changing Queens but failed to de fend accurately and lost in 44 moves. GM Dibyendu Barua, who had suffered an unexpected loss on Thursday, came back to the top tables by out playing FM Manuel Rayner of Wales. Im Norm holder J.S.Gokhale also registered fine victory over Bates of England. ;
British ladies champion, WEM Saheli Dhar, took over the lead among Theindian women by holding highly rated FM Adnan to a draw, Wim A Gokhale, who had suffered a defeat against a: ram Fri day, scored over Unrated in a tactical game arising from the French defense.
The other one to suffer defeat among Indians, apart from Pravin Thipsay, was an out of form Im V.Koshy. He was outplayed by 13 year old Sheldon. Points position after the seventh round; 6 points: J Spleeman ; 5.5 each: Placket, Van Der Sterren, Miles, Nunn, Budhmkoy, Sadler, Norwood, Reilly and Tkachiev 4.5 each; Barua, Thipsay, Adams, Jayant Gokhale 4 points: Saheli Dhar 3.5 each: B.
