NEW DELHI:A spontaneous reaction from the Indian government (o the murder of a Sikh couple at Calcutta last week was that the state governments should cooperate against the alleged militants but the government at the same time hastened to add that such actions should be legal. The Indian home ministry’s officer was commenting on the registration of a murder case at Calcutta, In fact, it turned out that the Calcutta double murder was done by a “missile squad” of the Punjab police. There appears to be numerous missile squads in operation which have been arresting Sikhs not merely in Punjab but all over the country. The West Bengal chief secretary wrote to the Punjab chief secretary protesting against the arbitrary action of Punjab police in killing a Sikh couple. The Punjab police has been keeping silence on the matter, it has neither denied its involvement nor confirmed it, Obviously, the Punjab police’s involvements well-known 16 the Indian prime minister who refuses to hold any enquiry against the Punjab police chief for murders in Calcutta. Similar complaints have been made by the Madhya Pradesh police. The Punjab police has been making frequent forays into that state to arrest and kill Sikhs on grounds of their involvement in militancy in Punjab.
