NEW DELHI: Punjab police chief K.P.S.Gill is at present camping in Delhi to lobby for a political reward for services rendered to India by killing thousands of Sikh youths in the past two years. He wants to be governor of one of the states. He appears to be sick of Slaying as directorgeneral of Punjab police or a similar position in any other state.
Gill is lobbying despite the fact that the Indian government has indicated its desire to retain him in Punjab on an extended tenure. Chief Minister Beant Singh has written to the Indian government “recommending” extension of one year for Gill as Punjab police chief, This letter is a mere formality although a decision on Gill was taken by the Indian government informally a few days ago. In India the effective power on the law and order front rests with the prime minister and his team of officers although on paper such power is vested in the state governments. Observers feel that it will not be easy for Gill to persuade the Indian government otherwise. More so when the Delhi blast has jolted the authorities into realizing that militancy is alive and kicking and is not dead as Gill would like Delhi to believe.
