NEW YORK: Secretary General Boutros-Boutros-Ghali has rejected the suggestion that the United Nations intervene unilaterally in the Kashmir issue on the basis of the existing Security Council resolutions. The world body needs approval of both Indi and Pakistan for playing any role in the issue Ghali said in his first formal press conference after taking over as the chief executive.

Replying to a question by a Pakistani correspondent Ghali asserted that the United Nations cannot play any role even if one party of the dispute does not accept it The correspondent persisted with the question saying the principle is true if it is a question of mediation but on Kashmir he Said clear cut resolutions already exist for holding self-determination in the State. Ghali said he would have the same answer — unless there is an agreement the Security Council or other organs of the world body could not implement the resolutions.
