CHANDIGARH: Eleven persons including four militants were killed Sunday night.
The strike call by various political parties in the state to protest the killing of 78 train passengers near the industrial town of Ludhiana on Saturday night evoked a partial to near total response and passed off peacefully.
Train and bus services plied normally throughout the state. Shops and business establishments were closed in some parts of the state including Tarn Taran and Gurdaspur where the strike call evoked near total response.
Meanwhile the army conducted flag marches in Nawanshahar Banga and Phillaur towns of Jalandhar district.
A hardcore militant Sher Singh of the Babbar Khalsa was killed in an encounter with security forces near village Fateh pur in Patiala district.
Militants shot dead one Mohinder Kaur in Dali village of Sangrur district.
Two militants identified as Gurmail Singh alias Gela and Prem Singh alias Prema were killed in an encounter with security forces near village Ajaib Wali in Majitha district Sunday.
Reports said both the militants who were arrested earlier were being taken to another village for recovery of arms and ammunition when a gang ambushed the escort party. Security forces returned the fire. Both of them were killed in exchange of fire.
