CHANDIGARH: General Ranjit Singh Rana of the Khalistan Commando Force was killed along with his brother Inderpal Singh in what police called a gun battle on the Guru Har Sabai Road near Faridkot. According to the police story, Rana, a well-known freedom fighter and one of the most wanted men by the Indian Government, ‘was travelling by a scooter with another person when a party of police and CRPF tried to stop the Yehicle. The police said that the freedom fighters opened fire which was returned by the police resulting in the death of Rana and his brother. Curiously, no security personnel were injured even though they were attacked firs. The police claimed to have recovered a Chinese made rifle, one 12 bore doubJe barrelled gun and 63 rounds of ammunition.
Police had framed Ranain number of murder cases, including that of former Punjab Minister Sainam Singh Bajwa.
Meanwhile two policemen and ‘two others were also killed. Seven policemen were injured in incidents of violence and one Narinder ‘Singh Nindi’ surrendered to the security forces.
The police officers were killed when gunmen raided the Central Detective School here on Wednesday morning. The car borne gunmen in a well-planned action struck at 5:40 am. They also injured six people.
The officers killed were identified as sub inspector Bhaskar Ghosh of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Sub inspector Vinod Sharma of the Central Industrial Security Force.
Four policemen on guard duty at the school have been dismissed for dereliction of duty. They allegedly did not fire at the gunmen ‘even though they were within the range of their weapons, The Chandigarh police have announced a reward of Rs 25,000 to anyone giving information leading to the arrest of the assailants,
The city administration has also announced compensation of Rs. ‘one lakh each for the families of the two police officers Killed, Rs 50,000 for the seriously injured and Rs. 2000 for the other injured.
Three killings were reported from Amritsar district, One Santa Singh was shot dead and his niece Amarjeet Kaur was seriously injured by unknown assailants in their house at Dinewal village, another person was killed in Ok a village.
