HOUSTON: The leaders of the seven richest nations have expressed their “particular concern” over violence in Kashmir but have been encouraged by the forthcoming secretary level talks between India and Pakistan.

Secretary of state, James Baker, said the events in Kashmir “threaten regional stability and they could imperil the growth of political and economic freedoms in the two democracies India and Pakistan.”

Baker, who was briefing reporters on Tuesday on the political declaration to be issued at the end of the summit, said the leaders were “encouraged” by recent moves towards a dialogue, obviously referring to the foreign secretary level talks later this month.

“We agreed to use all means at our disposal to encourage and support this process,” he said.

While Baker dealt with the Kashmir issue separately, he read out a common statement on some of the other issues including Afghanistan, Kampuchea and Angola.
