FRESNO: Sikh Community of Fresno arranged a fundraiser on July 21, 1996 at Ramada Inn for the benefit of World Sikh News. The function started at 7 pm and lasted till 10 pm. Dr. Mohinder Singh Poonia handled the job of Master of Ceremonies admirably well. The speeches were short and sweet and all speakers pointed out the need for a strong media and urged Sikh Community to support its only voice in the Western World.
Prof. Atamjit Singh from University of California, Berkeley,, pointed out the dire need for a Sikh media and urged Community members to give their unconditional support in order for us to avoid repeat of June “84. He praised WSN efforts for the last 12 years to keep Community informed.
Mr. Narinder Singh Somal, Secretary WSN, explained the brief history of newspaper since its inception. He did an excellent job of explaining in Punjabi although the Slides were in English. Dr. Satnam Singh Atwal introduced the members of the Shere Punjab Sport Club and thanked Dr. Poonia, and Pashaura for their hard work and efforts to organize the function. Other Speakers included: Amandeep K. Matharu, who pleaded for financial help to keep the Punjabi program alive at University of California Berkeley. S. Pashaura Singh Serenaded the group by singing in his melodious voice. Ms. Guddi Sidhu gave some suggestions to improve the paper in addition to a Punjabi poem.
At the end Dr. Gurinder Singh Grewal, Chief Editor WSN, thanked everybody in attendance and expressed his fervor hope that in future we can expect your cooperation and help to make this paper a viable entity.
