FRESNO, CA: Frustrated by the recent spate of violent crimes directed towards Asians, local Sikhs joined by other Indian groups, staged a protest Tally in front of Fresno city’s Civic Center, The demonstrators criticized the indifference and callousness in arresting and punishing criminals indulging in violent acts. They expressed anguish and fears of their safety after the gruesome murder of Mr. Amnk Singh Kang.

Mr. Kang, a store clerk was gunned down by unidentified individuals when he was working at a convenience store. His coworker was also attacked but luckily he survived.

During the past three years, at least 12 people from Indian descent have been murdered. More than 200 others have also been affected by such crimes.

 

Mr. Harry Gill, a Caruthers based insurance company owner, discussed how the Sikh community was scared to death. He said, “We do hard work and pay taxes but are being gunned down in return.” More than 100 protesters met with Fresno Mayor Jim Patterson and city police chief. Addressing the rally Dr. Mohinder Singh Poonia expressed his anger and sorrow over the murder of Mr, Kang. He exhorted Sikhs to unite together and become active in local politics.

During Nov, 1995 Dr. Jasbir Singh ‘was beaten to death when he went out for an evening walk. Dr. Singh migrated to USA only two years ago. His assailants have not yet been arrested.
