CALCUTTA, Dec. 11, Reuter: Gurkha separatists in Eastern India shot dead four paramilitary policemen on Friday in renewed violence in the tea~ growing Darjecling area, State officials said.

West Bengal State Home Secretary N. Krishnamburty said a police convoy was returning from raid on a separatist amp near the IndoNepal border when it was ambushed near Pokhriyabong, about 30 km from Darjeeling.

The Nepali speaking Gurkhas have demanded a separate State of Gurkhal and to be carved out of ‘West Bengal.

The demand has been rejected by the State and Central governments, but Central Government officials have said that a Hill Council allowing some limited autonomy could be set up.

(On Thursday, Darjeeling Police Chief Ramesh Handa and a border policeman were wounded in another ambush. State officials said the gunmen fled across the border into Nepal.
