SANTIAGO, CHILE: Former military ruler Gen. Augusto Pinochet has claimed he is the target of hit men. In an interview published in the newspaper La Tercera on Sept.20, the 76-yr-old Pinochet said he is “in the first or second place on every list of people they have targeted to kill.” He did not elaborate.
Pinochet survived a 1986 assassination attempt by left-wing extremists that left five of his bodyguards dead.
Pinochet, who seized power in 1973 after the overthrow of the Socialist government of Salvador Allende, stepped down as president in 1990 but still commands the army.
