SRINAGAR: Unidentified gun- men shot dead former Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Ghulam Qadir Mir at his Muran residence in south Kashmir district of Pulwana while three per- sons, were killed and 20 others arrested.

An official spokesman said that unidentified gunmen gate-crashed into the house of Ghulam Qadir Mir at his residence in Pulwama: district at 8:15 a.m. on April 9, and shot him dead. The 60-year old Mir died on the spot.

Mir who was elected to the state Assembly in 1969 bye-election as an independent candidate, was among the few former legislators who remained in the valley de- spite threats.

Mir joined politics when he participated in the “Quit Kashmir” movement as an underground student leader and was imprisoned in 1946. An influential leader of the now defunct Plebiscite Front, he was arrested in 1955, 1958 and 1965.

No militant organization owned the responsibility for the killing. He is the 11th prominent politician of the Kashmir valley who fell to bullets.
