IMPHAL (PTI): Two motorcycle bore gunmen shot dead former Manipur minister for fisheries revenue and works H.T.Thungam and kidnapped an Indian administrative service (IAS) officer H.Devshekhar Sharma in two incidents on Oct. 22 according to official sources.
The sources said the gunmen halted Thungams jeep as it was driving out from a meeting and fired at him at point blank range killing him instantly at Thangmeib and Polem Leikai area here His driver escaped unhurt though.
The sources said suspected extremists also kidnapped Sharma but his driver was freed at Bamon Leikai area.
Security forces launched a massive search around Bamon Leikai and other surrounding places but there was no clue to the officer’s whereabouts the sources added.
Director General of police (Manipur) A.V.Liddle had sounded a red alert throughout Manipur Oct 21 following the intensified activities of armed insurgents in the past few weeks.
