GUWAHATI: The flood situation in India’s north-eastern state of Assam deteriorated Tuesday following further rise of the Brahmaputraand its tributes along its entire 800-km-long stretch submerging fresh areas of crop land and human habitation.
Latest official reports reaching here said the Brahmaputra and most of its tributaries were flowing above the danger mark in the Brahmapuw valley disrupting road communication in several places. Extensive damage to standing crops was also feared.
Reports said the flood situation in Majuli island was serious as three fourth of the area of the island was flooded and over 300 families were rendered homeless. Majuli Island had been severed from the rest of the country as steamer and boat services, the only mode of communication, had been snapped due to high water.
In Jorhat district, over one 10 million people have been badly affected and road communication in a number of places suspended due to high floods. Loss of standing crop land was feared, the reports said.
Several relief camps have been Set up. People are also taking shelter on roads and embankments.
In Kamrup, Nalbari, Barpeta, Goalpara and Dhubri flood waters of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries have swamped vast areas causing extensive damage to standing crops and affecting road communication.
