NEW DELHI, India, Aug. Eleven people died in flash floods near the north Indian Hill town of Shimla yesterday and more victims may be found in outlying villages, the Press Trust of India (PTI) said today.
The floods, which washed away large numbers of houses, added to the misery across a swathe of northeastern India where at least 150 people have been killed.
Reporting from Assam, PTI described the situation as grim along the entire Brahmaputra valley, with army boats and helicopters rescoring “countless marooned people” after the third bout of flooding in the past month.
In parts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and West Bengal, power supplies have been cut, many roads are impassable, bridges have been washed away and river steamer services have had to be suspended.
Monsoon rains have failed, however, to reach northwest India and the capital New Delhi which are in the grip of one of the worst droughts this century, according to weathermen.
