COLOMBO, Nov. 10, Reuters: Five Sri Lankan troops were killed today by a rebel detonated landmine at Periy apulli malai in eastern province, the government said.

It did not give details. A police constable was killed yesterday and ‘sever more were wounded when rebels shot at their jeep in the eastern Trincomalee district.

‘The government also said that security forces killed six rebels in an ambush at Yavuniya in Northern Province yesterday.

It said the Tamil guerrillas were travelling in a van when troops shot at them as they approached a roadblock.

‘Tamil guerrillas are fighting for an independent homeland in the north and east of the island.
