NEW DELHI (PTI) Five persons including presidential election loser Kaka Joginder Singh filed nomination papers for the August 19 vice presidential election opening.
The others who filed their nominations are Ved Narain Tripathi Madhavendra Kumar Sharma Kutta Dhartipakad Agarwal and T.D.R. Harichandra.
Kutta Dhartipakad Agarwal and Harichandra had also filed their nominations for the presidential election which were however rejected.
Meanwhile the election commission issued a notification calling for tenth vice presidential election on August 19 formally setting in motion the electoral process
Nominations can be filed till July 31 and scrutiny of nomination will be done on August for the withdrawal of candidature is August three.
The Lok Sabha secretary general C.K. Jain who has been appointed returning officer for the election issued a public notice in the Gazette of India notifying the election. T.S Ahluwalia joint secretary in the secretariat has been: appointed the assistant returning officer.
The term of office of the incumbent vice president Shankar Dayal Sharma is due to expire on August two but he has already been elected president and is due to be sworn in on July 25.
The total number of members in the Electoral College for the vice presidential election is 790 consisting of 233 elected and 12 nominated members of Rajya Sabha and 543 elected and two nominated Lok Sabha members.
