NEW DELHI: A ruling party member in the Rajya Sabha last week asked the government to register criminal cases against former President R. Venkataraman and former Prime Minister V.P. Singh, alleging that both of them were responsible for the assassination of the late Rajiv Gandhi.

While V. P. Singh, as Prime Minister had withdrawn the Special Protection Group (SPG) cover to Rajiv Gandhi, the former President, despite repeatedly requests did not ensure that adequate security was provided to the assassinated former Prime Minister, S. Ahluwalia told the House. Ahluwalia and several other Congress members accused the Center and the Tamil Nadu Government of not assisting the Joint Commission, set-up to look into the conspiracy aspect in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
