LUDHIANA: International Human Rights Organization (IHRO) is concerned that Gurjit Singh (son Of Randhir Singh) of Mohi village in Ludhiana district of Punjab, has not been’ set free or produced in any court, despite the fact that he is in Custody of the police since May 8, 1993. He is 21yearold. According to his maternal uncle Dr Paramjit Singh Bhundri,Gurjit Singh has been picked up by five plain clothed policemen in a private Maruti car without number plate from near the Birmi village Bus Stop on May 8 afternoon when he was going on a Bajaj Chetak Scooter (Owned by Dr Paramjit Singh) along with Prem Kumar of Jagraon. The policemen bundled him into the car and also took away the scooter. Prem Kumar was asked 16 go on foot.

Prem Kumar informed Gurjit’s Uncle Dr. Paramjit Singh about the incident who along with his fellow men enquired about his whereabouts from the nearby police Stations, but no one helped him in this regard except Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Chander Shekhar, who on May II unofficially admitted that Gurjit was in police custody. The DIG did not assure Dr.Singh regarding Gurjit’s release or legal arrest in some case. The parents and other relations are worried about the fate of the young man.

THRO Administration Secretary Gurbhajan Singh Gill has already written to the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Union Minister for Home Affairs and Punjab Home Secretary, Seeking their intervention in the matter as Gurjit’s relations fear torture and even liquidation at the hands of the police, as is the practice in the state.

Dr, Paramjit Singh, apart from meeting police officials, has submitted petitions to the Director General of Police, Punjab, the DIG, Ludhiana Range, and the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), in this regard.

The JHRO has also called upon the United Nations and Amnesty Intemational to raise their voice against Gurjit’s illegal police custody so that his life could be saved.
