Srinagar: The National Conference led by Mr. Farooq Abdullah had decided to observe July 2, next as “murder of democracy day in the state.”
The party has decided to announce an elaborate agitational programme, to be followed by the rank and file of NC) on Id-ul-Fitar, end of the month, according to a release of the party.
Quoting Mr. Nazir Ahmed Sheikh, NC(F) general secretary, it says that since the assumption of office by the Shah Government, people had been subjected to economic hardship and corruption, nepotism and lawlessness had become the rule of the day rather than an exception.
According to Mr. Nazir, the Shah Government had let loose terror on supporters of NC(F) and innocent people were being subjected to untold harassment.
Referring to the alleged harassment of women by police and Army at border check posts at Razdani Pass, Zethusi, Kanzalwan, Tota Bridge and Mela Bridge on BandiporaGurez Road, he said since there are no photographs on the identity cards they were re fused clearance.
He said Gurex-Telil areas were also facing acute shortage of essential commodities and problems of transport but nobody was giving heed to these public issues.
Mr. Nazir has said that the current agitation of NC) was not aimed at just acquisition of power but restoring democracy and finding a solution to the burning problems facing the downtrodden people of the state.
