JAIPUR (PTI): Every third blind person in the world is an Indian and 81% of the blindness is due to Cataract, says Dr.A.S.Mehrotra, Professor and head of Ophthalmology Department in the S.M.S. Medical College here.

In his presidential address at the 17th Rajasthan Ophthalmological conference and symposium of glaucoma, Prof Malhotra said according to the 1989 census, of the 32 million blind in the world, about 13 million were Indian.

There are another few million who have lost one eye, he said.

He said 81% of blindness was due to cataract and “with all our manpower we are unable to operable more than 16 lakh cases of cataract annually.”

He said there were about one million blind person sin Rajasthan.
