LONDON, Reuter: Everton goalkeeper Neville South all held Liverpool at bay in a goalless draw before the biggest English league crowd of the season. Effort and skill were very much in evidence for the 48,000 spectators but openings were infrequent as both defence stood firm despite a difficult swirling wind at Goodson Park. Liverpool had the ball in the net in the 22nd minute but stand in referee George Courtney disallowed Ian Rush’s effort for a foul on Derek Mount field.

Courtney was the central figure again in the 25th minute when, despite strong Everton appeals, he ruled out a penalty after Adrian Heath went down under a Mark Lawrens on challenge.

Everton were also out of lunch’ when mount field thundered a header against the Liverpool bar after Graeme Sharp had) neatly flicked on a Kevin Sheedy comer.
