AHMEDABAD: The city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat is to be renamed Karnavati.
The general board meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party controlled Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Friday adopted a resolution to this effect, amidst noisy scenes and protest by opposition.
The Janata Dal whose 26 members staged a walkout protesting against a remark made by former Mayor Jayendra Pandit of BJP said a committee of prominent Citizens and historians should be convened before changing the city’s name. It was a known fact that Muslim Emperor Ahmedshah had founded the city in 1411.
Ina resolution Congress I member Nissar Ansari said the BJP’s decision had neither historical nor geographical basis to claim that Ahmedabad was once Kamavati.
Later the board approved a standing committee decision to rename the city. This is yet another example of how minorities are sought to be bulldozed in India a Muslim member Gujarat Assembly protested.
