DHAKA, Reuter: ‘Supporters of Bangladesh President Hussain Mohammad Ershad urged him to hang his main ‘opponent in Presidential elections, Sayed Farooq Rahman, for his party in a bloody coup in 1975.

“Hang Farooq,” chanted thousands of government supporters as Ershad began addressing a campaign rally ahead of next Wednesday’s poll.

Farooq has claimed responsibility for the killing of Sheikh Mujibur Rehman Bangladesh’s founding father and first President in the coup.

‘Six members of Mujib’s family were also killed in the coup, which was followed three months later by another military takeover. Farook has since spent much of his time in Libya.

Ershad asked his audience for patience and said he would look into their demands.

Bangladesh’s main opposition groups, including the eight party alliances led by Mujib’s daughter, Sheikh Hasina Wajed have said Ershad will rig the poll and are not taking part in it.
