DHAKA‘: In a dramatic announcement Dec 3, Bangladesh President Hussain Mohammed Ershad resigned and withdrew the weeklong state of emergency.

Ina broadcast to the nation over the countrywide radio and television hookup, Ershad declared that presidential and parliamentary elections would be held simultaneously.

Political observers here interpret Ershad’s announcement as a victory for the opposition alliances, which had launched a sustained campaign demanding the resignation of the president and holding of free and fair elections under an impartial authority. Ershad had said he had invited former U.S. president Jimmy Carter as an observer to Bangladesh.
