NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court, Friday, stayed deportation of U.S. citizen, Patricia E Munday detained in Bengal state.
A division bench in its order directed the West Bengal government not to deport Munday till further orders of this court.
Monday was member of the United Nations High Commission for refugees (UNCHR) team which won Nobel Peace Prize in 1981 for its relief operations for Ethiopian refugees in Somalia.
The apex court, however, declined to the prayer of the counsel for petitioner, V M Tarkunde that she should be admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences for treatment.
The standing counsel for the Bengal government submitted to the court that he has not received any instructions from the state government in the matter.
However, he produced a copy of a report published in a national daily quoting a minister saying that the Bengal government has no knowledge about the detention of Munday in. the state since January 26.
The court, however, refused to take note of the press report and asked the council to file reply on or before March 2.
