NEW DELHI: Eight Indian states and the Union Territory of Pondicherry, will go to the polls on February 27 to elect new legislative assemblies while elections to 14 parliamentary seats from Assam has been put off following a dispute over electoral rolls, the election commission announced here.

General elections would be held in Rajasthan, Himachal, Bihar Orissa, Maharashtra, Gujarat Arunachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, the Chief Election Commission, R V S Peri Shastry, told a news conference,

Announcing the poll schedule, Shastry said countermanded elections to three parliamentary constituencies of Shahdol in Madhya Pradesh, Palani in southern state of Tamil Nadu, and Durgapur in West Bengal, pending countermanded elections from seven assembly constituencies in Karanataka, Andhra and Uttar Pradesh pending byelections to eight assembly constituencies in states of Haryana, Kerala, Meghalaya and West Bengal will also be held on February 27.

Shastry said the commission had decided against holding byelections to the Faridkot parliamentary constituency in Punjab, byelections to the legislative assemblies of Assam and Jammu and Kashmir and byelections which cannot be held by reason of pendency of election petitions or other court proceedings.

Byelections to one assembly constituency in Kerala where a vacancy had arisen a few days ago and rolls have yet to be revised will not be held.

Shastry said the commission would be able to decide on elections in Delhi and Punjab only after a firm indication was received in this behalf from the Centre about the revocation of president’s rule as was the usual practice.
