PASCAGOULA, MS: On August 16,1992, when the Sikh Community of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida, visited the residence of Dr. Balwant Singh for a religious congregation, a sign board with the writing “Elect Dr. Balwant Singh He’s Honest” was lying among so many posters in the yard of the house. In a small town of 1500 voters, where people hardly know anything about Sikhs, at least 200 voters believed the honesty of Dr.Balwant Singh. The rest of the votes were divided between the other two contestants. Dr.Balwant Singh contested an election for a state representative of Mississippi during early August 1992, One day Dr.Singh received a telephone call from a fellow American who inquired if Dr.Singh was a Sikh and Sikhs were the people who shot Mrs.Gandhi. After listening to the answer to this question, the voter told Dr.Singh that he was not going to vote for him at all Dr.Singh then explained to him the real situation during the attack on the Golden Temple and since that time. Then the voter was very sympathetic and he invited Dr.Singh to his residence, This voter was a handicapped person who helped Dr.Singh a lot in his campaign.
Dr.Singh attended the Democratic National Convention in New York this year and many of us saw him several times on National Television. Regardless of the result of the election the Sikh community of USA highly appreciated Dr.Singh for giving a nice image of the Sikhs to the American Public. In appreciation, the Sikh community of USA emphatically asked Dr.Singh about the expenses that he had incurred during this election campaign. The Sikh community will be more than pleased to take care of these expenses.
