‘Sikhs were in a state of benumbed horror in June 1984 after Indira Gandhi sent tanks and artillery inside the holy Golden Temple. While most Sikhs and Sikh institutions raised their voices in protest, the Sikhs in North America found their representative organisations strangely quiet. Most of the Sikh bodies then refused even to comment on the attack in which over 10,000 pilgrims were massacred and the Akal Takht reduced to rubble.

On June 27, 1984 over 5,000 hurt and angry Sikhs assembled in New York’s Madison Square Gardens. This was where the World Sikh Organisation was born with the avowed objective of creating a homeland for the Sikhs Khalistan. The horrible events of June 1984 were never to be allowed again and Sikh glory of the past century was to be restored.

This July 27, WSO celebrated its sixth anniversary in Sacramento reaffirming its policies and objectives. The morally bankrupt Hindu regime of India has yet to be driven out of Khalistan but the struggle has been sustained and intensified thanks to brave Sikh youth fighting against great odds on the plains of Punjab and organisation like the WSO have mounted pressure on democratic governments to take heed of the gross human rights violations in the so called democratic nation of India.

The WSO organised a massive lobbying effort right from its inception and last year saw House Resolution 1046 almost succeed in the U.S Congress. Thanks again greatly to WSO efforts there is another bill in Congress this year to stop development aid to India.

The Sikh massacres in Delhi and several other north Indian cities in November 1984 were Hindu India’s frustration at not being able to suppress the Sikh identity which embodies equality, justice and freedom. More than ever before, Sikhs worldwide came to the conclusion that parting ways with Hindu India was the only solution to their problems.

Since 1984, thousands of Sikhs have been killed in jails and in staged encounters. The WSO convention of 1990 highlighted the plight of the Sikhs in India and stressed its commitment to personal liberty, human dignity and freedom for Khalistan. The assembly warned India to with draw its troops and to stop killing innocent Sikhs forthwith.

A resolution also expressed gratitude to all individuals and organisations fighting for Khalistan and WSO’s in debtedness to those who have made sacrifices for the cause. Those in the guise of Sikhs and Sikh organisations working hand in glove with the Indian regime against Sikh interests were also warned.

Tributes were paid to the thousands of known and unknown Sikh martyrs.

There is a move afoot in to have a resolution adopted in the Indian parliament to apologise for Operation Blue star. This is under active consideration of the President and Prime Minister of India. Many Sikhs are ready to accept this and let bygones be bygones. The WSO made it clear that such a compromise would mean trading in the flesh and blood of our martyrs. Basics this apology, if it is tendered, is no guarantee that what has happened in the past will not be repeated.

The only guarantee that our holy places will not be desecrated is Khalistan.
