NEW YORK: In a letter addressed to the Chief Delegate of the Indian Consulate in New York, Dr. Naunihal Singh, Director Administrator WSO, has protested against the unseemly behaviour of the Indian officials during the International Immigrants Parade, The letter is reproduced below:
Dear Sir:
I wrote a letter on October 20, 1986, to S, Paripuran Singh Heir with regards to his interference in local affairs of Sikh immigrants. I understand now that the Indian Delegates to the United Nations Mr. A. Kumar and yourself have taken an active role.
It is unfortunate that the Hindus residing in the tri state area decided to boycott the Salute to the Statue of Liberty at your recommendation, [also understand that you did this because there was a Sikh flag raised at the fund raising dinner on October 18, 1986, at the Mariott Marquis Hotel. There is a rumor that you stated that “if the Sikhs want to fly their flag, it should be restricted solely to the ‘Sikh gurdwaras”.
Let me tell you that, by that token, the Indian flag belongs only to the Indian Parliament and its Offices; it should not be used for parading the streets of New York. ‘What bothers me in this whole situation is that the so called intellectual and educated people like you have lost the spirit of independence over the years and have become completely subservient to the Nehru family and dynasty and anybody asking for his individual liberties is labeled as a terrorist.
Is it a crime to be a minority ethnic group and ask for one’s rights? The way that the power has run in India by the Nehru family over the past 37 years is only possible in India because even in a dictatorial country like Russia or China, the power is not transmitted from one family member to another.
By these standards, the whole democratic system in India is a sham and the elections are a farce, manipulated to bring the Nehru family into power repeatedly.
You and the Indian Consulate represent the Nehru family. You are for the cause of the Nehru family and dynasty.
Is it not a shame that you went to school and lost all of your independent thinking and now are part and parcel of the dynasty of the Nehru family?
I am releasing the enclosed letter to the press and I am not going to rest until you logically explain your behaviour.
As the Sikh community perceives this action of yours, it is a direct interference to break relations with local U’S communities and want to warn you that if you continue to interfere, we will take ‘appropriate steps with the United States government.
We want to live in peace and harmony with our surroundings in the United States and are not bound by dictates of the Indian Consulate which is only projecting, the Nehru dynasty.
‘Awaiting your reply, I remain.
‘Naunihal Singh Dir. Adm. WSO
