NEW ORLEANS, LA: On Nov.22, 1994, like the past eight years, like this year too on Thanksgiving, the Sikh Community of New Orleans gave free food to the needy people. Every year, Dr. Balminder Singh Mangat (a well-known psychiatrist in New Orleans) was the chief coordinator for this noble cause. ‘These services were provided while the local Sikh Community celebrated Guru Nanak’s 525th birthday, 50 families were sponsored. Sister Mary Frances, Director of St. Philip Social Service Center, asked the present writer that why we requested 55 units of each item when we told Sister Frances that we will be sponsoring SO families. [Then explained to her that according to Guru Nanak’s mission, we don’t want to disappoint few families should there be more than 50 families. Sister Frances liked the idea and said,” Guru Nanak’s mission is really overgenerous! Finally, St. Philip Social Service Center thanked the local Sikh community in general, and masters Zoravar Singh (11), in particular, in appreciation of his excitement and help in loading the food into their vans.
