LUDIANA: Dr. KS. Gill is the New Vice Chancellor of the Punjab Agricultural University Ludhiana.
The board of regents at their meeting on December 20, 1989 confirmed Dr. Khem Singh Gill as new vice chancellor of the PAU, Ludiana. Dr. Gill will assume his new assignment effective January 1, 1990.
Dr. Gill belongs to village Kaheke in FaridKot district. He graduated from Government High School, Rode with honors and received a merit scholarship. During his college years at the Khalsa college, Amritsar, he maintained his academic excellence and completed his B.S in Agriculture with honors. After completing his B.S degree he started his service in the department of agriculture as Agriculture Inspector. He completed his M.S. under the guidance of Dr. S.M. Sikka and did pioneer work in linseed breeding.
In 1962 he was selected for higher studies at the University of California at Riverside California from where he obtained his Ph.D in Genetics in 1965. He was determined as most qualified and most deserving candidate by the merit beard and was selected as Professor of Plant Breeding. As Professor of Plant Breeding he devoted his energy and efforts to improve disease resistance and develop high yielding and better quality wheat varieties. Within a short time he developed several varieties in all the states and he was awarded the Gold Medal and Rs 10,000 cash award for his contribution by the government of India.
Dr. Gill has also served as Dean of the College of Agriculture and Director of Research. Presently he is working as Director of Extension and is Trustee of the International and Research Institute on Cereals in Mexico. Dr. Gill has three children, Dr. Baljit Singh Gill M.D., Dr. Davinder Kaur M_LD., and freedom fighter S. Ranjit Singh Gill who is presently detained at the New York Correctional Center.
