MOSCOW (PTD): An Indian diplomat was robbed on Oct.27 by a two unidentified youth near his residence in the centrally located Posh Kutugovsky Prospekt area.

Diplomat Raminder Jassal was accosted by two young men as he entered the lift in the diplomatic apartment block which houses several Indian families.

One of them threatened Jassal with a knife while the other asked him to hand over his wallet. After divesting Jassal of about 140 U.S. dollars the miscreants ran away.

An unhurt but shaken Jassal said he had lodged a complaint at the local police station but there was apparently little chance that the two miscreants would be apprehended soon.

Several other Indians have fallen victim to robbers and thieves here earlier. An ITDC official was robbed and slashed with blades last month and a couple of residences of the staff of the Indian embassy have been burgled recently.

Police officials acknowledge that there is an unprecedented increase in crimes against foreign nationals in Moscow city. Apart from declaring their helplessness the officials explain this.as a result of the worsening economic situation which makes foreigners who are likely to be carrying foreign exchange “attractive targets.”
