AMRITSAR: The Rashtnya Suraksha Samiti demanded the deployment of the army in Amritsar city in view of the ultimatum of the militant organisations for the closure of all liquor meat and tobacco shops and video parlors.

In a statement here the samiti President Dr Baldev Raj Chawla condemned the threats issued by the militant’s organisations to the business community under their nine-point programme to declare Amritsar as a holy city. The forcible closure of shops would render thousands of persons jobless he said.

Stating that the samiti had no objection to Amritsar being given the status of a holy city Dr Chawla said but this should be done by convincing the public and not by intimidation.
