GUWAHATI: Mahanta who now heads Assom Gan Parishad said here that the demand for independent Assam grew stronger with such measures by Delhi as extension of President’s rule for six more months.
In a statement Mohanta said that “New Delhi does not recognize Assam as anything more than a colony”. He added: “The people of Assam have now realised that the rulers in Delhi could no longer be allowed to decide the fate of the people of Assam.”
Meanwhile the militant tribal organisation ULFA fighting for an independent Assam asked political parties of Assam to make their stand on an independent Assam known by March 31. It is not clear as to what the ULFA will do after seeking this clarification from the political parties.
Sources in Delhi appear to have encouraged dissidents of the Assam Gan Parishad to attack Mohanta for his anti-Delhi views and have threatened to open income tax cases against the former Chief Minister.
