NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court today stayed till further orders the operation of an arrest warrant issued against Syed Abdullah Bukhari, Iman of Delhi’s Jama Masjid, by the Kerala High court for nonappearance before it in a contempt case.

Issuing notice on a petition by the Imam seeking transfer of the contempt case to the Delhi High Court, Justice M.H. Kania and Justice Kuldip Singh observed that “pending notice the arrest warrant will not be executed”.

The Ernakulam Bench of the Kerala High Court had directed’ the Imam to appear before it in person on October 5, 1987 on a contempt petition moved by one Thomas Varghese for his speech at a rally at the Capital’s Boat Club organized by the Babri Masjid Action Committee on March 30 that year.
