MONTREAL : the federal government will sink $46 billion deeper into debt this year. Martin said the government now expects a deficit of $44 billion to $46 billion this year. That’s up from the $32.6 billion forecast made just seven months ago by the Progressive Conservatives.
As a measure of the country’s financial dilemma, Martin said each newborn Canadian enters the world owing $17,000 as his or her part of the accumulated federal debt of $485 billion.
