LIMA, PERU: As the capital braced for Shining Path revenge attacks, President Alberto Fujimori said Monday he would consider executing the guerrilla group’s captured leader.

The arrest of Abimael Guzman, known as “President Gonzalo” to his devoted followers, was likely to weaken the insurgency, which has killed thousands of people and caused billions of dollars of damage since 1980.

Guzman, 57, was being held Monday in the basement of a fortress like police station in downtown Lima. The street in front was blocked, and four armored vehicles were stationed outside. Two dozen soldiers and police armed with automatic weapons stood guard.
