Dear Sir,

I was shocked to see the news report in the issue of WORLD SIKH NEWS, dated 28th July, in which you have made certain remarks about me which are not only grossly unfair but downright tendentious. I have always had the deepest regard for the Sikh faith. In fact, my family owed its rise to the patronage of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, and we have been brought up to pay equal reverence to the Darbar Sahib in Amritsar as we do to our family temple, the Shri Raghunath Mandir, in Jammu.

  1. The Virat Hindu Samaj is an organization founded upon universal concepts of the Vedanta the Upanishads and the Gita. These ideals are universal and there is no scope in them at all for any narrow fundamentalism. It is preposterous to link me or my organization in any way with unfortunate events in North India. No one has even remotely suggested this, and I consider it extremely irresponsible for your correspondent to have made such a statement.
  2. I may add that among the portraits that I have brought with me from my Museum in Jammu is the original of Sardar Sobha Singh’s famous portrait of Guru Nanak Dev, which occupies an honored position in our house. I happen to be closely related to the Sikhs, as my wife’s younger sister is married to a distinguished Sikh diplomat.
  3. May I suggest that the circulation of such disturbed reports will do great harm to HinduSikh amity which is such an important element in our national life. I do hope both your English and Punjabi editions will print this letter, so that any misconceptions caused by the earlier report are removed.

Yours faithfully,

Karan Singh
