NEW DELHI: Darbara Singh, veteran Congress I leader and former Punjab chief minister, died of a massive heart attack at a local hospital here Sunday.

Singh, 75 is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter.

The former Punjab Chief Minister complained of chest pain and was rushed to the Batra hospital.

Doctors attending on him said all efforts to revive him failed and he breathed his last around 1935 hours.

Darbara Singh held several ministerial posts in Punjab before becoming the chief minister in 1980, succeeding Zail Singh. He remained the chief minister till 1983,

An upper house (Rajya Sabha) MP since 1984, Darbara Singh was also a member of the Congress I working committee and the party’s central parliamentary board at the time of his death.

An uncompromising opponent of the Khalistan movement, Darbara Singh survived several attempts on his life.

The body of Singh will be brought to the Congress] office here at 1100 hours Monday to enable people to have last glimpse of their leader, party general secretary Vitthala Narain Gadgil said.
