AMRITSAR: The Akali Dal (Mann) will oppose the move by the Centre to appoint Surendra Nath as the new Governor of Punjab.
Talking on telephone from Dalhousie on Sunday the party Press Secretary Jagjit Singh alleged that Nath during his tenure as Advisor to the Punjab Governor soon after Operation Bluestar had been responsible for torturing hundreds of Sikh youths.
A man with an anti-Sikh and anti-Punjab vision could under no circumstances be accepted as the Governor of Punjab he said.
Jagjit Singh speaking on behalf of the party president Simranjit Singh Mann was reacting to reports published in a section of the Press indicating that Nath had emerged as the front-runner to replace Gen O.P. Malhotra.

The Sikh Students Federation (Mehta faction) on Sunday refused to associate in the Sikh unity move initiated by the SGPC president Baldev Singh Sibia. Sibia had called a conclave of representatives of Sikh political parties’ federation factions and other organizations at Anandpur Sahib on Aug.11 to forge unity to counter the alleged police repression.
