VARANASI: Curfew was clamped Dec 13 morning in areas under nine police stations in Varanasi following tension.
Police lobbed about a dozen tear gas shells Dec 12 evening when some students of the Varanasi Hindu University took out a Procession to protest communal disturbances in Aligarh, Kanpur and’ other places. The students began brick batting when police stopped their peaceful procession at Lanka area outside the university campus.
All schools and colleges have been closed for three days.
A peanut seller was stabbed in Jaitpura area and another person ‘was stabbed in Luxa area.
A youth committed suicide in protest against the reservation policy and communal disturbances in the state,
Twenty people, including six students, were arrested Dec 13. The students were arrested at the BHU gate after lobbing tear gas shells. With this, the number of people arrested during the last 48 hours has risen to 54.
