AMRITSAR: Curfew was imposed in four sensitive localities in and around the city early Monday as the police and paramilitary forces carried out a joint operation to flush out militants and unearth arms and ammunitions
Senior police officials told re- porters that curfew was imposed ‘rom 0400 hrs, to 0845 hrs. to check the movements in these areas and to carry out door to door search of the localities already identified as “sensitive”.
Three militants of the Khalistan Commando Foree-Zafarwal were arrested and a huge cache of sophisticated arms and ammunition seized from village Harsha China, close to the Rajasansi airport.
The arms seized included two AK-74 and two AK-54 Chinese assault rifles with light magazines, two pencil bombs and about 550 cartridges. The arms were concealed in big capsules made of plastic pipes and hid underground.
The operation was supervised by senior security officials. The operation would be a matter of routine from Monday for an unspecified period, the officials added.
Meanwhile, about 250 suspects were rounded up during the operation but majority of them were let off. About 50 of them were still being interrogated.
About 66 suspects were rounded up in a similar operation in Kapurthala district. Forty of them were let off immediately while the remaining 20 were being interrogated, according to information received by police control room here.
