NEW DELHI: Authorities clamped curfew on the western Indian city of Aurangabad after pitched sectarian battles, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported today.
Police said the curfew was imposed on Friday after30 people were injured in clashes between supporters of the militant Hindu Shiv Sena group and Muslims.
Several vehicles and shops were set ablaze by the rioters who fought with stones and Knives, PTI ‘said.
It said the curfew was relaxed for a few hours yesterday but re-imposed until day break tomorrow after violence again erupted,
It quoted official’ sources as saying the situation was tense but under control as armed policemen ‘enforced the curfew.
PTI said authorities had also banned) gatherings of more than five people in the nearby town of Sangamner, where one person was killed and three were injured when Police opened fire at rioters on Friday,
Police arrested at least 90 people after the clashes in Sangamner, Which broke out ‘when one person. Was stabbed after a quarrel between two groups of boys, PTI added.
