NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court Feb.24, directed a CBI inquiry into the death of Gurmit Singh, an under trial prisoner in Tihar Jail taken by the Punjab police and alleged to have been killed in a take encounter. The court has directed the CBI to file its report to the court within three months, The court ordered this inquiry after finding that the affidavits filed in reply to the writ petition filed by the deceased’s wife did not satisfactorily explain the killing of Gurmit Singh.

Gurmit Singh was an undertrial prisoner held under TADA in Tihar Jail and was ailing. The apex court had directed in May, 1993, that if the Punjab police required him in some other case, he should be taken to Punjab after issuing a fitness medical certificate and giving him full security.
