STOCKTON: Ca.: Hon. Norman D. Shumway, Congressman from the 14th district of California was the Chief Guest at a special dinner hosted in his honor by the Sikhs at the residence of (Drs.) Mr. and Mrs, Jasbir Singh Gill. The dinner was held in the spacious backyard overlooking the swimming pool. More than 150 Sikhs from Stockton, Fresno, Madera, Modesto, Fremont, San Francisco, Sacramento, Yuba City, Los Angeles, and other places were present to offer their thanks and gratitude to Hon. Shumway for voicing his concern at the plight of Sikhs in Punjab. Plaques were presented to him on behalf of the Sikh Temple (Gurdwara) Stockton, World Sikh Organization and Sikh National Educational and Cultural Organization.
World Sikh News presented a Roll of appreciation for his courage and commitment in championing the cause of the persecuted in the World. In response to speaker’s sentiments Hon. Shumway said that he was prompted to speak in the House of Representatives by the fact that human rights of an important section of Indian population were not being given the Required consideration.
He was pained at the reports of persecution of Sikhs and wanted that their legitimate aspirations be respected.

Hardyal Singh Dhatt, former Vice-president Stockton Gurdwara, Mohinder Singh Sandhu, Dr. Jasbir Singh Gilland Dr. Gurinder Singh Grewal spoke on the occasion while Prof. Manjit Singh Sidhu acted as the Master of Ceremonies.
