Dear Vie:
I received your heartfelt letter about human rights abuses in India welcome your advice on this issue considering your longstanding interest and your role as a member of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus.
India’s human rights performance is indeed the focus of considerable attention. We raise our concerns about the situation in Kashmir and in Punjab regularly with Indian authorities and have had some success in making the government in New Delhi more sensitive and accountable on human rights matters For example Sikh leaders arrested earlier this fall were released last month in part due to pressure from us and the international community But there is more work to be done and I can assure you we will continue to make human rights a key part of our dialogue with the Indian government.
Thank you for writing. I hope we can stay in touch on this and other issues.
Mr. Bill Clinton President of the U.S.
