For 13 Parliamentary seats there will be 9 new candidates. The group that owed allegiance to Zail Singh has suffered the maximum. His own nephew, Mr. Basant Singh, who was the member of the dissolved assembly, has also been denied party ticket. Several ministers of Mr. Darbara Singh’s Cabinet, about half a dozen, have been denied tickets including Mr. Santokh Singh Randhawa who was alleged to have links with Gurinder Singh, the killer of policemen in Chandigarh. Mr. Harcharan Singh Ajnala and Mr. Ajitpal Singh were also denied tickets. Mr. Jagdev Singh Jassowal former Chairman of a Corporation was also denied party ticket because of the recovery of his son’s motorcycle which was allegedly used for the killing of Sant Longowal. The list of candidates that the congress party has released indicates that there has been a systematic plan to put up weak candidates against certain pro government Akali Leaders including Surjit Singh Barnala, Mr. Balwant Singh, Mr. Ravi Inder Singh, Mr. Sukhjinder Singh and Mr. Balwant Singh Ramuwalia.
