NEW DELHI: Several Congress I MPS late Tuesday demanded that the Congress-I party in parliament be left free to elect its leader as efforts for a consensus on the issue were intensified by senior leaders including two parliamentary boards’ members. About 40 M-P.s many of them Supporters of Maharashtra chief minister Sharad Pawar questioned the scope of the Process of consensus and said it is vital that the Party (on the choice of the leader)

So that the consensus candidate becomes the unanimous choice

Parliamentary board members K Karunakaran and Arjun Singh met Rao and Pawar in pursuance of their consensus efforts.

The statement calling for the CPP-I to be left free to elect its own leader was originally signed 14 MPs including Shivshankar and N.K.P Salve. The number later swelled to over 40

Several M-Ps invited to a dinner hosted by salve appended their Signatures to the statement. Many of them were from Maharashtra and supporters of the chief minister Sharad Pawar.

Pawar also attended the dinner a little later but did not sign the Statement.
