MODESTO: As Congressmen Condit arrived for the dinner in his honor he was quoted by Sikh women. Saying that he appreciated her vote she looked at him and said simply. “That’s what friends are for.” “lll remember that” said Mr.Condit. Sikhs from Stanislaus county area celebrated the victory of Gary Condit to U.S Congress with Congressman and Mrs.Condit. About 70 Sikhs met the Condits for a dinner meeting. Friday Nov.20 Meeting was arranged by Naranjan S.Samraand Sam Samra sons of Baba Thakur Singh Samra. )Baba Thakur Singh Samra is a Senior member of the Sikh Community in California who commands respect from everyone Congressman Condit was briefed by several speakers Dr.Satnam Singh was the master of ceremonies. Dr.Gurinder Singh Grewal Dr.Amarjit Singh (spokesman Panthic Committee) Hardyal Singh Dhattand Dr Joginder Singh Sami spoke and briefed the Congressman on Sikhs problems The historical perspective of Sikh problems were indicated Current police brutality and killings of Sikhs in large number are the main concern of Sikhs Their view of the misuse of U.S aid by India a country which kills and tortures its religious minorities and spends this money on nuclear programs was brought to the Congressman’s attention. The appointment of S.S.Ray as ambassador to the U.S. was also a main concern voiced.
Congressman Condit thanked the Sikhs for their friendship and loyalty. He promised that he would stand with the Sikhs as he has done in the past. He also said that the United States should not financially reward the people who violate human rights.
